Bluebirds lost to nest failure

Photobucket

A chick hatched on Monday and was found dead in the box yesterday. Mama and Papa B haven't been seen today despite offerings of meal worms. I removed the failed nest hoping to encourage another brood. As I took the nest from the box, one of the two remaining eggs fell through a hole in the bottom of the nest. It broke open revealing only yolk and no embryo. Guess 4 of the 5 eggs were infertile. I'm not sure what killed the only chick as I didn't seen any nasty House Sparrows around. My guess would be that we've had some very chilly mornings this week and Mama B wasn't seen sitting on her eggs as much as you'd think she should. I am hopeful they will return and try again.
